Parton Distribution Functions and QCD Global Fitting
نویسنده
چکیده
High energy hadrons interact through their quark and gluon constituents. The interactions become weak at short distances thanks to the asymptotic freedom property of QCD, which allows perturbation theory to be applied to a rich variety of experiments. The nonperturbative nature of the proton for single hard interactions is thus characterized by Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) fa(Q, x) of momentum scale Q and light-cone momentum fraction x. The evolution in Q is determined perturbatively by QCD renormalization group equations, so the nonperturbative physics can be characterized by functions of x alone at a fixed small Q0. The ongoing project to extract those functions from experiment, and to estimate their uncertainties, is the subject of this talk. The applicability of single nucleon PDFs to hard scatterings between heavy nuclei is a key question to be addressed in the workshop.

Uncertainties of predictions from parton distribution functions . I . The Lagrange multiplier method
We apply the Lagrange multiplier method to study the uncertainties of physical predictions due to the uncertainties of parton distribution functions ~PDF’s!, using the cross section sW for W production at a hadron collider as an archetypal example. An effective x function based on the CTEQ global QCD analysis is used to generate a series of PDF’s, each of which represents the best fit to the gl...

متن کاملHigher order QCD corrections to charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering and global fits of parton distributions
We study the perturbative QCD corrections to heavy-quark structure functions of charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering and their impact on global fits of parton distributions. We include the logarithmically enhanced terms near threshold due to soft gluon resummation in the QCD corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order. We demonstrate that this approximation is sufficient to describe the av...
